A Deakin university actual confidential project, A stackable short course that enables learners to understand workplace change issues, create a plan that is realistic and achievable, and use appropriate tools for managing and contributing to the change process. Deakin’s "Stackable learning" allows learners to choose how far they want to take their learning; whether it's just one short course with a microcredential awarded on successful completion or multiple microcredentials which build towards a postgraduate degree.
For the production of digital resources for this online microcredential course, there were three key elements to consider. First, the Deakin "stackable" model and format, meaning the course content must be designed in a way that could combine with a variety of other courses/stacks,and offered in bite-sized chunks so that it was easy to digest and keep learners engaged. Second the course must fit within the Future Learn brand (which is the platform used for course delivery). Last but not least a unique look and feel for the Change Tools course which supported the learning experience. .
Understanding the market was the first step in developing the new course learning model. Deakin has a very diverse set of learners, ranging from locals to internationals. We conducted research to see what competitor online courses were available to them.
By identifying our learners, we can personalise the courses to fit different needs.
Following research analysis, we set out to establish a 5-week learning structure that accommodated the learning goals of different user personas in a "stackable" learning model. Cross-functional teams achieved this through a Mural board collaboration, creating design briefs, storyboarding and writing course content, designing learning and assessment tasks and producing assets.
Storyboard contents, graphics and videos were approved by the production team, teaching team and copyright team prior to publishing the course on FutureLearn connecting the course to the Deakin Stackable website and the D2L assessment platform before going live.
Storyboards, graphics and videos are approved by the production team, teaching team and copyright team. This process takes approximately a full week. Once the approval is achieved, we connect the course to the Deakin Stackable website and the D2L assessment platform before making the course live.
